"Do you want to play a game?" Are you a fan of the cult classic movie WarGames? Do you miss the days of the cold war? Do you like nuclear apocolyptic strategy games? If you answer yes to any of those questions then I have a game for you. It's called DEFCON. This game was originally for Windows users only and was created by Introversion Software. The official DEFCON site is located here. It is now also available for the Mac through a partnership between Introversion and Ambrosia.
It's enthralling, exciting, and captures the true paranoia of the cold war and the threat of thermonuclear war. You can play against AI opponents or others that are online. The choice is yours.
In this game you basically place silos, radar facilities, airfields, and aquatic fleets around your designated area. And then you blast your opponents off the map. Or try to. There are mods available as well, through the official site, which make the game even more of a joy to play. One of my favorites is the SOCOM mod which changes the look from the classic "WarGames" feel to a more modern satellite image look.
