Back in the day when you scoured Usenet your best option was, the now defunct, Thoth. Thoth is now no longer supported or available due to piracy and even though it still works extremely well under Tiger it's not the powerhouse it used to be. Unison is a carefully-crafted, genuinely revolutionary Mac OS X Usenet newsreader. It's even simpler to find the binaries you are looking for with this handy application. In Thoth, every part of a binary was listed seperately. In Unison, all parts of every binary is grouped together. You don't have to scroll down a long list to find every part to a particular binary, they are all in one place.
Some of the best features of Unison can be best summed up by the developers themselves: "It offers all the expected newsreader functionality: easy-to-navigate threaded discussions, the ability to ignore annoying posters, multiple signature management, and easy, Mail-like posting with spell checking and all the trimmings. But it also goes much, much further than any other Usenet client on earth, starting with a unique four-view interface that lets you view and work with Usenet group content in four distinct styles: messages, files, images, or music. It lets you preview MP3 files directly off a Usenet server, view images in an elegant iPhoto-like thumbnail view, prioritize transfers with a flexible downloads manager, find favorites quickly with a categorized column-view interface, smartly group files into meta-groups (like songs into albums), show download status beautifully in the dock, and much more."
One thing that Unison is missing, IMO, that Thoth offered is the ability to mark a newsgroup (or favorite) read without opening it. Other than that I have basically switched full time over to this Usenet reader. It is indeed the Reader for the 21st Century.
