Now, I'm not much of a video guru and don't mess with video much. But at times it becomes neccessary to do so. This application is a true videoites dream. Here are just a few things that this program will do for you:
  • DVD/SVCD/VCD PAL/NTSC MPEG2/MPEG1 conversions
  • Batch /Multiple files/ conversions
  • ReplayTV MPEG's conversion to DVD/SVCD ready MPEG2 movies [does NOT work with EyeTV HDTV files]
  • DVD authoring of ReplayTV, EyeTV, WinFastTV2000XP and Instant DVD recorder MPEG's without re-conversion!
  • Deinterlacing of source movies during conversion
  • "Tools" tab with Mux/Demux/Split/Join MPEG/Divx/VOB options
  • "Audio" tab with options to work with AC3,WAV,AIFF,MP2 audio files
  • Terminal output (You can watch progress in Terminal, and start simultaneous conversions)
  • Export2QT [- MPEG1/MPEG2/VRO/ReplayTV/TiVo/VOB/Hitachi VOB and VRO files to ANY QuickTime codec You have installed]
  • VOB converter [PAL <-> NTSC VOB re-conversions
  • And so much more it would probably take up a whole page!
Because I'm such a novice I'm going to base this review mainly on what others have told me instead of my own trials and errors. I did convert a few files; some turned out great while others were missing audio, grainy, or too small to watch. I'm not sure if it's my fault or the program itself. According to many people I've talked to that actually work with video on a daily basis this is THE program for you if that is what you do. Tech support is one of the best I've come across. Tosa tries his best to help you through the process if you are a newbie. For that alone I gave it two apples!!
I do have to say I wish this program was a little more intuitive for newbies and that there weren't some limitations. For instance, I wanted to convert an mpeg1 file that was formatted in PAL to an mpeg1 file in NTSC format. Apparently you can't do that. It won't convert mpg -> mpg. And some people I've talked to that said it can have said it's a long process to do so.
Overall, MPEG2 Works 4 Advanced is worth the money if you KNOW what you are doing with video. If you are wet behind the ears when it comes to this like me I'd suggest some loooong nights messing with the program or just leaving it be altogether.
