Way back when I did a review of a similar application called DiskTracker. At that time, and until now, I thought there would never be a program to catalog your disks that would ever compare to it. That was until Catalog came around. Catalog is not only easy and fast, but it looks and feels like a true OSX application. Also, instead of using multiple windows to do its tasks, all of them are done in one window. Outstanding!
Above is the main window. That is where a list of all things on the currently indexed disk (CD or DVD) can be found. Above that is a toolbar with some of the many features available to you.
To the left of that (like here) is a drawer showing all the disks you have cataloged. The nice thing about this is that the custom icons for these disks are even displayed.
Unlike other programs I've used this one has a nice feature. Click on a file in the main window. Now click the info button in the toolbar. An information drawer (shown at right) now replaces the disk list. This tells you the files size where it is at, creation date, and modification date. Pretty nice.
I'd have to say, though, that my favorite feature of all is the batch indexing. I indexed about 55 CDs/DVDs in about 8 minutes. That is ultra fast! All you do is choose the batch indexing feature, insert a disk, and Catalog will index it. It then ejects the disk asking for a new one. Insert next disk and that indexes and ejects, etc. Once you are finished all you do is click the done button.
Although I feel the price may be a bit steep by 2-5 dollars it is well worth the price. It does what it is designed to do and then some. Although, there is one feature I think it is lacking in. All indexes are shown as they were indexed. There is no way, that I can find, to alphabetize the index listing which would be quite beneficial. Regardless of this one little thing, if you want a super fast cataloging program with no hassles involved you need, no MUST, get Catalog! And because of this I am giving this program the coveted Golden Apple Award.
