I've been a fan of Interarchy since the days it was known as Anarchie. I started using it with version 2.1 I think and it keeps getting better. Interarchie is more than just an ftp tool. With this sweet application you can actually peruse the internet without being bothered by pages of graphics or pop-ups. There are limitations however as it's not actually a browser. It will display all links on a page and you will basically have to make a guess at where you want to go from there. I used to peruse the internet this way for about a year when I still used my Performa600 as it was so antiquated the browser was just too slow. Interarchy (then Anarchie) was a savior at that time.
The new version has some pretty amazing features:
  • Engine Upgrade
  • Long files (up to 9 exabytes), long filenames (up to 255 chars) and long URLs (up to 2502 chars)
  • Comprehensive Secure File Transfer Protocol support in Mac OS X
  • Queues; Drag transfers and other actions into a queue and have them executed in order
  • Delayed Transfers. Set up actions to occur at a later time
  • Repeating Transfers. Set up actions to repeat at regular intervals
  • Check Web Site Links. Automatically test and verify the links of a web site
  • Full Bookmark and URL management system
  • Mac OS X Net Menu. Due to popular demand, the net tools, including traffic watching, have been brought over to the Mac OS X version
  • Mirror Both Ways. Make a local folder look exactly the same as a remote folder by transferring only things that are different between the two folders
  • Tunnel via SSH. All FTP username and passwords can now be securely encrypted for security via SSH. This feature works for FTP Disks, This feature is only available under Mac OS X
  • Drag Browser Links. You can now drag and drop links from your web browser to Interarchy, rather than having to copy and paste them
  • Hierarchical main menu. To reduce the clutter and complexity of the main menu (the File menu under Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9, the Interarchy menu under Mac OS X) it has been factored into command sub-menus called FTP, Web and Net Manual FTP. The traditional Anarchie-style FTP listings and dialogs were renamed to "Manual FTP" to give them context from the new automatic
  • FTP Disk feature and the mirroring features
  • Rendezvous support
  • And much more!
One thing that I like is the new Organization Window (pictured at top). With this you can go to some of the more popular places on the internet or create your own directory filled with bookmarks. These things will also now show up in the new GO menu (formerly known as the HOME menu).
Some things that upset me that used to be supported in previous versions were:
  1. Hitting return when a file is selected does not automatically download that file
  2. There is no way to turn the organization window "on" or "off" in the preferences. You need to manually move it from the Startup Items folder in Interarchy Prefs to the Bookmarks folder (or just delete it as you can call ip up using apple-B)
Considering that these are the only two problems I've had with v6.1.1 and that there is a great user manual for download to help you along Interarchy gets our highest rating. Talk about things to come in v6.2 are pretty exciting too so keep an eye out for it.
UPDATE: Interarchy 7.x has become the grand daddy of all FTP clients. Among some of the great new features are:
  • OSX Native
  • Tabbed Browsing
  • Scheduling
  • About a few hundred more new features
If you use FTP quite frequently you should definitely go and purchase this one. It's a superior program at a superior price (the price has been reduced). It'll smooth out your workflow and make your life on the internet a hell of a lot easier.
