MacTracker is one of those applications that one wishes was out sooner than it was. I could have really used this back in 1992 when I had my Performa 600CD. This handy and FREE program gives you all the lowdown you need to know about your Mac (and any other Mac you may be curious about. Above is a window showing my own computer the iMac 15" flat-panel.
There are many things you can find out about your machine which helps when you want to upgrade it's interior. There is also a notes section where you can add your own personal notes. But it just doesn't do computers.
In the tool bar you can look up just about anything Apple made (even clones). I love the startup/death chime feature. With this you can actually hear what the machines sounded like in both instances. The only drawback I have come across is that the Software section only goes back as far as OS 7.6 and some of the hardware histories are either blank or the same as other hardware. I am greatly curious about the Mac OS from it's beginning until now and it would be nice to be able to look up that information here. Otherwise, a good solid app that one should definitely not be without.
UPDATE: MacTracker has been totally redesigned to look and feel as if it belongs within Panther. Now instead of using the original toolbar sytle listing it has evolved into a dialog style listing of different types of Mac geek things to look up. Much easier to navigate this way. A few drawbacks though with the new release. Although there aren't as many "blank" or repeating histories Ian has taken out the histories for all operating systems prior to OSX. I'd love to see all the Classic OS descriptions placed back in. Also, I'd like to see some custom "icons" for the clones. And I spotted a small error with the U2 special edition iPod "icon". The scrollwheel should be red not black. Even with these very small gripes I'm going to up my rating for this to 5 apples.
